December Activity Calendar and TV Guide

Yesterday I finished up 2 more calendars for the month of December- Our Activities (which include fun national holidays that we plan on celebrating, festivities we plan on attending, and arts/crafts we plan on doing together! Funny that nothing happens after Christmas on this calendar- you can tell where my priorities are!)
I also typed up a TV listing of Christmas shows we plan on watching- we just have the basic TV channels... plus I added in a few movie nights :) I love watching the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve- one day I will be taking my Boo to the actual performance!!!
Happy Teaching and CELEBRATING!! Enjoy these precious times!!!!

Do It Yourself Christmas: Family Yahtzee

I am quickly becoming addicted to Modge Podge! I found this ADORABLE tutorial at Thrifty Chick on making your own, personalized version of the very popular Yahtzee game!
My version is not even HALF as cute as Stacey's- but I had fun making it, and I am hoping that people have fun playing it!
Happy Holidays!

Do It Yourself Christmas: Nativity Blocks

About a year ago I came across this post on DIY Nativity blocks and I fell in love! They are great for kids (and cheaper than a toy nativity set) and made from their heart. I set out in my mind that I would be making them as gifts for my nieces and nephew!
I came across a few snags- I couldn't find the nativity stickers that Hilary used in her post. But I LOVE clipart and was blessed to find 2 really cute Nativity clip art sets. One is from Lori Wenerstrom (her clipart was highly recommended and she was kind enough to send me a copy of her nativity clipart since it's hard to find- it's sooo cute! ) and Amy Dott Harmer (cutest stick kids! I have purchased many of her sets!!!)

Set One (Lori's)

I made this set for my daughter. They were originally created as nativity puppets (but they make the cutest blocks, too!) I love that this set incorporates the Nativity story from the Book of Mormon as well as the Bible- visit her lesson plan here for more info)

blocks: Sun(other side star), Samuel the Lamanite, Nephi, Angel

three wise men, Joseph, Mary, star (other side sun), Shepard

Set Two (Amy's)
These are the blocks I made as gifts (and of course I made an extra set for me!) This is your more typical Nativity set... with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus in a manger, donkey, stable, angel, star, innkeeper, shepard w/sheep, three wise men and a camel. I bought some 2X4 and 2X6 boards at a home improvement store, had them cut into blocks, sealed them, and then modge-podged the clipart on!

Since this is for little kiddos, I also created some coloring pages to go along with the blocks in their "Nativity Box". (I also found a little story book to go in their box to complete the Nativity learning time fun!) I can't wait to give these Nativity Boxes to some of the CUTEST kids I know!!!

Happy Holidays!

Do It Yourself Christmas: No Sew Blanket

I have been extremely inspired from reading my blog feeds about all the wonderful DIY (do it yourself) Christmas gift ideas! And so I wanted to share what I have created (thanks to YOU!)
The first project is a No Sew Blanket. I read about it on Izzie, Mac, & Me's site. It seemed EASY enough for me to handle!
I made this for my daughter's "squishy present"- you know how most kiddos open pajamas Christmas Eve, well we have been blessed to get a few different sets of Santa jammies as hand-me downs, so I opted for a winter blanket instead! This was VERY cheap to make- this fleece was a remnant at the fabric store. I really lucked out!
I love Christmas and homemade gifts are lots of fun to make!

Toddler Recipes: Really Easy Taco Bowls

Here is another fun recipe to try with your tot! Instead of dealing with a regular messy taco shell, try baking a burrito in a mini pie tin instead (350 degrees for 10 minutes). This creates the hard taco shell, only in bowl form! (I just barely learned how to do it- I am thrilled! For you more seasoned cooks out there- I apologize for being so excited over something so small!!!)I adapted the recipe from Kraft Foods- only I used pie tins instead since our burritos were much too large to fit inside a muffin tin! And I think it worked out very well- a recipe I plan on making again soon!
Happy EATing! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Toddler Recipes: Cheesy Potato Cups

Now that I am pretty much fully recovered from the flu, I have been trying to get back into the swing of things and that includes pulling out my menu plan (which I LOVE having- I am one of those poor souls who is lost at the grocery store without a list!). I need a variety of healthy foods to keep my toddler interested in eating- when I found this recipe on Kraft Foods I was eager to try it out myself!
These cheesy potato cups were part of our "Try Something New Tuesdays".

I LOVE- the nutrition and color- plus they are very TASTY!!!
I STRUGGLED with how long they took to prepare- from start to finish, about 2 hours! And I am not a BIG cook, so trying to cut and scoop a boiling potato was not fun!!! Another thing- I think this is meant to be a side dish. My husband and I were starving after eating about 4 of these potato cups!
Will I make this again? Maybe for special occasions. Time is valuable! Maybe if the potatoes were baked the day before...
Happy EATing!

Tea Time and Rhyme Thursday- THE MOST THANKFUL THING

Today for our little learning time we read a treasured book called "The Most Thankful Thing" by Lisa McCourt. It started out really well- my Boo and I were sitting at her table having pretend "tea" while I read her this book. I haven't read this since I became a Mom, and the emotion of how thankful I really am for my daughter hit me while reading the last few pages. I am such a crybaby!! After reading the book, we went up to the kitchen table and colored some thank you cards for my daughter's birthday gifts. Since we really didn't have any Spanish learning yesterday, I tied it in today by adding "gracias" to each note!

Tumbling Tuesday- Thanksgiving Dances

This is a MUST HAVE activity for anyone with an active, dancing toddler! I was thrilled to come across some thanksgiving related dance moves at PE Central and although it says this activity is for grades K-2, my 2 year old had a blast! With older kids they can name off the food groups while dancing. (2 year old isn't quite ready for that yet!)

Here are the dance moves:
___________________________________________

MASHED POTATOES: The Mashed Potato Dance (fists closed, arms extended out in front, alternating up and down movement.) This exercises the upper body and potatoes are in the vegetable group.
TURKEY: Flap wings and gobble like a turkey while running carefully throughout the gym. This is an aerobic exercise and turkey is in the meat group.
APPLE PIE: Students roll like a ball (apple) towards the center of the floor and sit together closely like apples in a pie. Rolling needs flexibility and body management. Apples are in the fruit group.
CRANBERRIES: Students stomp on the floor on the cranberries to mash and puree the berries. This exercises the leg muscles and cranberries are in the fruit group and full of antioxidants.
GREEN BEANS: Students walk around the gym on their tippy toes, arms extended upward, attempting to look long and tall. This exercise helps flexibility, balance and body awareness. Green beans are in the vegetable group.
THANKSGIVING: Students walk around the gym shaking hands and giving appropriate compliments to their classmates. This is a way to show proper social skills.
___________________________________________
I created some activity cards that went along with each dance. As I was teaching my daughter the moves, I would show her the card first. After we learned all the dances, she picked a card and then we would do the corresponding dance. She loved the turkey but absolutely hated the apple pie (doesn't like rolling on the ground). Feel free to download- just click on the pic and save it to your desktop!
Happy Tumbling and Teaching!

My Faith Monday- A Short Lesson on Sharing

For my sweet little tot, sharing is not always the first thing she wants to do. We all know what an IMPORTANT and necessary life skill this is- so whenever I can teach her by example, in real life moments, or with a little lesson I do!I had a whole little mini lesson prepared with an activity verse (song with actions) and dice game. My daughter lasted only for the dice game. I downloaded a dice that had different sharing situations here. She colored it, I put it together, and we rolled it MAYBE three times! But we did talk briefly about each sharing situation and how we CAN share!

Happy Teaching and Don't forget to "share" your faith with your little ones!

Setting the Table Can be FUN!!!

One of the fun little spontaneous learning activities that my Boo and I have done is to learn how to properly set the table. I found this cute Thanksgiving printable of Max and Ruby on Nick Jr's website. After printing it off, I stuck it in a sheet protector for extra durability and protection. I placed it in front of my daughter during one of our little "dinners" with her play food- showed her how to properly place the utensils and dishes in the correct places, and then let her try. She got it immediately! She LOVED doing this activity over and over (as most of our toddlers do). I then transferred this play activity to setting the table upstairs at the dinner table. My little one still needs the assistance of the mat, and I am SO glad I stuck it in the sheet protector because she has already spilled on it! As you can see from this picture, she is using a plastic knife and a play plate at the table because she doesn't have a real knife (do they make toddler knives?) and her real plate was too big for the mat. Other than that, this was a real fun learning activity!

My Faith Monday- Families Are Forever

I am back in the saddle with a new week of learning ahead! My energy level is still down, but I feel strong enough to start doing our lessons again. Today for My Faith Monday we learned about families. There was a lot of curriculum that I wrote on our wiki, but I opted to just have my Boo paint a frame for a family picture. I picked up a frame and lettering for a buck at Michaels.

It was a short and sweet activity.

So here's our second official "My Faith Monday" post!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TODAY TO TEACH YOUR LITTLE ONES ABOUT YOUR FAITH??

Happy Teaching and don't forget to link up!
